"Turning the Key”: A Personal Journey of Closure and Healing
With the client’s kind permission, The Mental Health Foundation is honored to share this powerful declaration of closure and healing. It reflects the courage and strength found in personal recovery and we hope it may inspire others on their journey.
What does turning the key represent to me?
Turning the key is more than just closing a door, it's closing a chapter in my life. It is the final act of acknowledging that while the past has shaped me, it no longer defines me. It represents closure, reclaiming my power and choosing peace over pain. It’s not about forgetting, it's about freeing myself.
How will I behave after the key is turned?
I will move through life lighter, clearer and more present. I will no longer react to old triggers the same way. I’ll find joy in simple things again. My focus will shift to myself, my growth and my future. I’ll stop looking for answers in the past and start looking forward with curiosity and confidence.
What will I tell myself?
I affirm truths that reflect my healing and strength.
• I did the best I could with what I had
• It’s okay to let go, my peace matters more than my past.
• I am not what happened to me; I am what I choose to become
• Love didn’t fail; it just changed form
• This door closed, but I am still whole
What will I do to support this closure?
I will reconnect with my passions and the people who truly see me. I will start dreaming as “me,” not “we.” I will set new boundaries that protect my healing. I will move intentionally, even in small steps, toward the things that feel like freedom.
How will turning the key benefit me?
I will gain mental clarity no more obsessing on the past. I will experience emotional freedom released from guilt, shame and resentment. I will embody self-respect honoring my worth and the growth I’ve earned. I will feel empowered because I’m not waiting to be healed. I am choosing it. I am choosing me.
Every journey is unique and sharing stories like this helps us all move toward understanding and healing.
