Visiting Hight Intensive Care Unit (HIC) of the Altrecht
In view of the purchase of the land in St. Johns and the funding from the World Bank the Mental Health Foundation Board member Erika van der Horst and Eileen Healy presently responsible for the projects of MHF visited the Hight Intensive Care Unit (HIC) 'specialist in psychiatry' in Utrecht.
The objective of the visit was to meet professionals, understand the concept, and the construction of the HIC unit. It was a warm and enthusiastic reception from the side of Altrecht. MHF was welcomed by Marian Rooyakkers the unit head, professor Arjan Braam psychiatrist, Eric Zuidhoek manager, nurse en Merel Baay.
The unit has 3 floors, depending on the intensity of the care needed and the principle is to Isolate patients as little as possible. The units have the option to be closed off so that the patients can move around in a stimulus free environment instead of Isolation.
There is lots of opportunity for physical activities, a gym, table tennis and outdoor movement. Patients all have their own rooms and there is the option for rooming in, meaning relatives have the option to stay over.
Staff is as much as possible with the patients and spaces are light and with soft colors and lots of monitoring options.
We also briefly visited the reception, outpatient department and the FACT (Ambulant team).
MHF took home lots of information for a new building and will certainly maintain contact with the team at Altrecht.
Eileen also visited an Engineering company in the Hague that primarily works for Parnassia the Psychiatric specialists in that region.
Ing. Karel de Wilde has offered to advise regarding the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the new building. The TOR will require both Planetary and Technical approval before deciding on the architecture of the building.
MHF is grateful for all support it can get in providing for the best possible care to its patients.
